The engine has cylinders whose exhaust gas is delivered to inlet side of the engine via a pump, where the cylinders are equipped with a separate fuel supply (F2). The cylinders are operated with low-sulfur fuel (LSF) appropriate for exhaust gas recirculation. The cylinders comprise a two-stage turbo-supercharger with a high pressure stage and a low pressure stage. Exhaust lines of the cylinders are interconnected via a valve (V2) such that the exhaust gas of the cylinders is guided to turbines (T1, T2) of the turbo-supercharger by the operation of the valve. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
