The tachymeter has an image capture unit (10) which detects primary image data of environment of total station. A measuring unit (20) has a measuring probe (21) pivoting about different axes (V,H), a laser rangefinder (22) for optical distance measurement, and zoom camera (23) motor-driven with zoom lens. The laser range finder and zoom camera are equally aligned to define orientation of probe. The image capture unit is connected to measuring unit so that measuring probe is aligned to marker based on primary image data, and is aligned to measuring point based on secondary image data. An independent claim is included for method for acquiring measured value.
