The coil assembly (10) has several coil windings (11,11',11'') that is formed from second generation (2G) ceramic high-temperature superconductor (HTS) material which is made of yttrium-barium-copper oxide (YBCO). A bobbin (15) on which coil windings are wound mechanically stabilizes the coil assembly. A casting material (20) surrounds coil windings and has tensile strength and/or adhesion to the HTS material, which is less than tensile stresses acting on coil windings that leads to damage to the HTS material, in radial direction. An independent claim is included for method for manufacture of superconducting coil assembly.
