The device has a position determination module (LB) for determining the orientation of a display unit (PD), where the orientation of the display unit is detected by sensor data. A sectional image from the three dimensional data set is calculated according to the orientation of the display unit, and the sectional image is reproduced on the display unit, particularly a portable display. Markers (OM,OS) are arranged to determine the orientation of the display unit. An independent claim is included for a method for the visualization of sectional images of a three dimensional dataset to a display unit.
