The x-ray apparatus (1) has an x-ray source (2) pivotable around an axis (A) and a detector (3) co-operating with the x-ray source. A collimator (7) is arranged between the x-ray source and the detector. A collimator tracking unit (9) is formed to vary a geometrical parameter of the collimator during the pivoting of the x-ray source based on the data recorded from the detector. The geometrical parameters concern the position of the collimator. The x-ray source and the detector are formed for acquisition of three-dimensional image data. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an x-ray apparatus.
