The method involves detecting target torque for a drive unit (20), determining actual change in speed of a drive assembly, and adjusting the target torque in function of the actual speed change. The drive unit is used as an electric machine. Slippage between a wheel (24) of a motor car (10) and a track (26) is determined. The target torque is adjusted with respect to the slippage such that the motor car works against the slippage. A traction control system is used in a traction mode of the drive assembly. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling a drive unit of a motor vehicle.
