The method involves dividing a total flow rate at multiple mutually identical quantity measuring units (FT1,FT2,FT3). A measurement value is determined for each measuring unit. A middle value (MID) is determined from the measurement values, and each measurement value is compared with the middle value. The product of the middle value and the number of measuring units is compared with the sum of the individual measurement values. An erroneous measurement value of one of the quantity measuring units is detected by inequality in the result of one of the comparisons.
