The automatic closing device (1) has a lid (5) that closes an opening (2) against ingress of liquid in closed position, and which is moved away from opening in open position. A float (22) is floated with rising liquid level to cause closing of the opening by lid. A closing spring (7) is biased in open position, and is made to apply force on the lid in closing direction in closing position. A releasable locking device (8) activates the float so that the lid is moved to the closed position by the closing spring.
