The method involves determining a value of traffic-relevant characteristic of a motor car (100). The determined value is periodically sent with a request (102) to a service provider (110) in connection with a time stamp according to traffic information, where the time stamp includes a current time for a determination time point. The characteristic is comprised of information regarding a current travel direction, a current position and/or current average speed of the motor car, where the current position is determined by a position determination unit i.e. global positioning system (GPS) module.
