The washing machine has program controller (12), water supply system (8-11), tub (1), rotatably mounted drum (2), drum drive motor (14) and reducing unit (16) in an intermediate space (31) between the drum and tub. The intermediate space is divided into several spaces (17,18) in which the space (17) is adjacent to the drum and space (18) is adjacent to a lateral tub wall (27). The reducing unit reduces a speed of a radial flow of air due to a horizontal axis of rotation (3) of rotating drum. An independent claim is included for method for operating washing machine.
