The method involves detecting current incineration running-off in a diesel engine (4) by using a combustion chamber pressure sensor (8). A glow process of a glow plug (2) is detected in dependence of a parameter detected by the sensor. A glow state of the plug is adapted to the current incineration running-off in the engine. The glow state is changed with respect to the annealing time and/or the annealing temperature of the plug. An actual value of a parameter of the glow process is adjusted when an actual value of the detected parameter exceeds a reference value. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling a glow plug in an internal combustion engine.
