The method involves forming an electrical isolating portion of an electrical isolating body between measuring electrodes of a soot sensor so that soot particles settle between the measuring electrodes to enable a current flow between the measuring electrodes. The current flow is evaluated as a measure for soot concentration. The soot sensor is thermally rejuvenation by removing matured soot particles by guiding high voltage at locations of the matured soot particles to burn the soot particles, when the soot concentration exceeds a preset soot load.
