The method involves determining an inspection specification for control function of predetermined reference variable indicating specific state change in an air supply system (4). The number of over-and-undershoots is indicated during status change of the inspection specification. The error of the air supply system is detected based on the inspection specification for control function of predetermined reference variable. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a control device for inspection of control of gas mass flow in air supply system of combustion engine; (2) a control system for inspection of control of gas mass flow in air supply system of combustion engine; and (3) a computer program product comprising program code stored in computer-readable data storage medium for inspection of control of gas mass flow in air supply system of combustion engine.
