The device (27) has a laser device (26) to generate laser ignition pulses (24). A pumping light source (30) is provided for optical pumping of the laser device. A photodiode array (270) is arranged in a region of an optical connection (280) between the pump light source and the laser device, where the pump light source generates laser radiation to be radiated on a photodiode of the photodiode array. The photodiode array comprises a series circuit of the photodiode and an impedance network in which the photodiode is biased by direct current (DC) voltage in reverse direction. The laser device is a semiconductor diode laser. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a laser ignition device.
