The method involves determining widths of slots (2a) at a top part and widths of slots (2b) at a bottom part of a folding crate during passage of the folding crate through a processing machine. The width of each slot is determined by calculating the width of displacement of a laser line projected on the folding crate. An image of the laser line is captured by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera, and a value of the width of the displacement of the laser line is derived for the slot by mathematical or statistical calculations.
