The method involves compressing water-saturated gaseous medium i.e. hydrogen streams (2, 5, 8), in a piston in multiple compressor stages (V1, V2, V3), where the gaseous medium contains water content, and the piston is filled with ionic fluid or fluid e.g. perfluorinated polyether and thermal oil, that is not affected by the water content contained in the gaseous medium at low vapor pressure. The compressed medium is subjected to water separation in water separators (D1, D2, D3), where the compressed medium is cooled in heat exchangers (E1, E2, E3) before entering into the separators. An independent claim is also included for a device for compressing water-saturated gaseous medium.
