The method involves passing light from a planar light source i.e. rectangular LED (1), through a pattern generator (4) i.e. static slide, and an aperture (5), where the static slide has a frequency in a direction (7), and the LED includes a longer side (8) and a shorter side (9) that is oriented parallel to the direction of the frequency of the static slide. The shorter side of the LED is extended such that the extension of the shorter side of the LED is less than or equal to diameter of the aperture. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for determining three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of a surface of an object (2) a device for projecting a pattern on a surface of an object (3) a device for determining 3D coordinates of a surface of an object.
