The device has a cover (10) covering an airbag (2) and a gas generator (4) at a steering column (30) in direction of a driver in an inserted state. The airbag and the gas generator are defined in the cover. A fastening element (40) e.g. screw, is fastened at a steering wheel hub (6). The cover comprises a cap (11) that is directed towards the driver in the inserted state. The cap is replaceably attached at a shell portion (12). A damper element (20) i.e. annular buffer, is arranged in the cover, and the gas generator is defined at the cover.
