The method involves assigning knocking limit, and determining an operating point and cylinder-selective default value (13) for a gradient of a knock level curve in response to a firing angle (2). The operating point- and cylinder-selective default value for the knock level curve gradient is stored in a control unit. A regulator is provided with an actual value, an adaptable reference value and a manipulated variable. An operating point- and cylinder-selective adaptation is carried out during the operation of an internal combustion engine. An independent claim is provided for a device for performing the knock control method.
