The apparatus has a container (2) filled with sharpening medium (3) and moved by a driving apparatus (4), where a rotationally symmetric workpiece (1) is immersed into the medium. A moving part (5) is arranged adjacent to the workpiece in the container and comprises two differently dimensioned agitating arms (6, 7) that are kept in contact with the medium. The workpiece comprises a concave portion (8) and is rotated around a central axis (9), and the moving part projects into the concave portion. One of the arms is longer than the other arm. The moving part is moved relative to the workpiece. An independent claim is also included for a method for surface treatment of a workpiece.
