The ionization source comprises a capillary channel (1) provided with orifice at one of its end, through which a gas can be fed. The capillary channel can be connected to a mass spectrometer. The capillary channel is provided with photo-effect material (2) in its interior, such that electrons can be triggered via photoelectric effect from the irradiation with light (3). The wall (4) of the capillary channel that triggers the photoelectric effect light is partially transparent. An independent claim is included for method for producing analyte ions for investigation in mass spectrometer.
