Producing methane gas from organic residual material containing solid and liquid, comprises acidifying the residual material and methanizing. The acidification and methanation are carried out in separate consecutive steps, where remaining solids are separated after acidifying and only liquid effluent is supplied to the methanation. An independent claim is also included for a device for producing the methane gas, comprising two mutually downstream reactors, containing a first reactor, which is an acidification reactor (3), and a second reactor, which is a methanation reactor (7), and a solid separator (5) that is arranged between the two reactors.
