Producing a hard material-coated workpiece (1) made of a metallic material, comprises: introducing recesses in a surface (2) of the workpiece; applying hard material particles (6) on the surface and into the recesses; and melting the metallic material by electric arc heating using a tungsten electrode. An independent claim is also included for a workpiece used as a tool with a hard material coating, which is manufactured by above mentioned method.
