The device emits an acoustic signal stimulating echolocation of toothed whales for warning the toothed whales, where the signal is a linear chirp extending over a time duration of about 1.4 +- 0.5 seconds and comprising a starting frequency of about 400 +- 50 clicks and a stop frequency of about 1.100 +- 100 clicks. The signal comprises a set of chirps, where the chirps are spaced at 1 second from each other. The device stimulates echo signals for locating and deterrence of toothed whales. The device emits twelve sequential clicks without pause to detect bats. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for counting of toothed whales within a habitat (2) a method for training toothed whales to an acoustic warning signal.
