The machine has a rotary grinding disk (1) and a workpiece retention device (2) movably arranged to each other. An impact sound sensor (3) is arranged at the workpiece retention device in such a manner that contact sound, which arises during contact between a workpiece (4) and the grinding disk, is determined by the impact sound sensor. The workpiece is fastened to a round rotary table that is movably supported. The workpiece is in contact with the rotary grinding disk to produce sound waves transmitted to the rotary table. An independent claim is also included for a grinding method for processing a workpiece.
