The device (22) has a warning/alarm unit switchable with a sensor (7) i.e. gas sensor or odor sensor, and/or a filling stop device. The sensor detects chemical characteristic of volatile gases (4) of a medium (3) in a tank (2). The sensor is actively switched by loosening of a tap (5) from a service station (8) or by unlocking of an inlet/outlet valve (15) of the tap. A warming apparatus produces an optical and/or acoustic warning/alarm signal after activation by a sensor/control device that is perceptible in a surrounding field of the service station. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a protection device (2) a service station.
