Hydrothermal carbonization comprises carrying out a quasi-continuous flow of biomass using many batch pressure reactors, which are connected in series. The arrangement of the individual batch pressure reactors is such that the biomass or product transport from a reactor in the subsequent reactor is carried out by gravity and internal reactor pressure.
