The device has a transformer cooling circuit (12) coupled with a liquid cooling circuit of a traction motor over a heat exchanger. The liquid cooling circuit of the motor is attached to a liquid cooling circuit of a vehicle component e.g. power converter. Cooling power assigned to the traction motor corresponds to a maximum portion of a total cooling power not required for cooling the vehicle component. Flow of liquid in the traction motor is controlled such that maximum cooling performance of the liquid cooling circuits is not exceeded. An independent claim is also included for a method for cooling an electrical traction motor to drive a rail vehicle.
