The free-piston engine has a motor block having a workspace, where the workspace includes an inlet valve (1) and an outlet valve (3) for inlet and outlet of steam of a medium. A cylindrical cavity is provided in the motor block, which immediately opens in the workspace. A free piston (4) is longitudinally displaceably guided in the cavity. The inlet valve and outlet valve are formed opposite to the flow direction of the medium valve opening. The inlet valve and outlet valve are pre-stressed in the open state by a unit acting in the opening direction. An independent claim is included for a free piston with an inlet-return valve.
