The engine (10) has a heat accumulator (24a) for maintaining a coolant warm during stoppage of the engine. A holding capacity of the heat accumulator for the coolant is two times larger than a holding capacity of the engine. An inflow opening (46a) for the coolant in the heat accumulator is provided at a ground level. A drain opening (48a) is provided in a ceiling proximity. The inflow opening and the drain opening are thermally insulated in the ground level within the heat accumulator. An inflow line (46) in the heat accumulator is designed as an ascending manifold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating an internal combustion engine (2) a heat accumulator.
