The system (10) has a portable measuring device (14) comprising a keyboard retainer (16) and a stylus (18) for touching a workpiece (12) by a sensed object (20) e.g. palpation balls. The stylus is received in the retainer in a fixed position. The measuring device is provided with a positional change sensor (26) for detecting position change data (32) of the measuring device. A data processing device (34) determines coordinates (22) of the position change data. The measuring device is provided with a transmitter (28) for transmitting the position change data to the data processing device.
