The sensor (10) has transmitter (20) arranged in housing (12) with wall (14) of non-rotationally symmetrical cross-sectional shape whose diameters in radial directions are different. The transmitter excites surface acoustic wave (24) in housing wall such that surface acoustic wave adds energy to uncoupling location in a form of compression waves (26) to liquid (16) flowing through housing and compression waves adds energy to coupling location in a form of second surface acoustic wave. A receiver (22) generates output signal correlated to properties of second surface acoustic waves.
