The method involves forming actual value for air mass from parameter signals, and setting upper limit value for the air mass to the actual value based on operating condition of an internal combustion engine (3). Reference value for the air mass is calculated based on expected torque. Minimal valve is formed from the upper limit value for the air mass and the reference value. The air mass is adjusted based on minimal value, where the actual value for the air mass is calculated based on content of fuel additive-components in fuel and temperature of an inlet valve (9). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program executed on a computing unit of a motor vehicle for executing a method for controlling an internal combustion engine (2) a computer-readable medium with a computer program for executing a method for controlling an internal combustion engine (3) a control circuit for an internal combustion engine.
