The method involves inferring sensor values (12) to chemical and/or physical characteristic liquid values characterizing liquid, where the sensor values are detected by a sensor. A scalar value (G) characterizing a state of the working fluid is computed based on liquid characteristics (16), a map, a curve and/or a model (18), and a remaining useful life is detected based on the scalar value. Permittivity and/or viscosity of the liquid are detected as one of the sensor values. The remaining useful life is computed based on a driving profile of a motor vehicle.
