The device has an end effector (30) movable with relatively high acceleration over short distances, directly or by an auxiliary axle unit (20). The axle unit is movable with relative reduced acceleration over working areas (1-3) of a machine tool along length-variable beams (12, 15) of the tool. Each beam has elements displaceable towards each other such that the first element is movable as a base axle, and the axle unit is translatively movable at the last element in direction of movability of the elements. An independent claim is also included for a method for translatory movement of a length-variable beam of a machine tool.
