The invention relates to a secure storage system for pieces of evidence, comprising: security boxes; a consignment unit into which the pieces of evidence that are packaged in security boxes are placed; an entry lock which reads the memory of the security box containing the pieces of evidence, stores the memory in a central storage memory, transfers the boxes to a storage system conveyor including a shelved storage space having defined storage points, and brings the boxes to a predetermined storage point or picks the boxes up from said storage point upon request; an exit lock which verifies the requested boxes that are conveyed out of the storage system conveyor; and an out-of-consignment unit in which the boxes that contain pieces of evidence and that have been verified by the exit lock are handed over to the person picking them up once the person's identity has been checked. The invention also relates to a method for handling and safekeeping pieces of evidence.
