The system has a lifting device movable in a horizontal plane and comprising a fuel element gripper (8), which is displaceable along a vertical stroke path. A mast camera (2) sends captured images to a computer system (1). A stroke depth determination unit (11) determines current stroke depth of the fuel element gripper and transmits an appropriate stroke depth value to the computer system. The computer system superimposes the images captured by the camera with a centering stencil i.e. mask. The computer system changes a position and/or form of the stencil based on the value.
