The method involves providing device for varying compression ratio and device for varying the stroke characteristic for gas exchange valves. The deactivation of cylinders (1-4) is performed at partial load range. The operation of cylinder with respect to an operation prior to the deactivated cylinder is driven by a change in compression modified compression ratios (7.1-7.4).
