The method involves controlling engine oil dilution parameter of an internal combustion engine (5) by the engine control. The engine oil dilution parameter switches the dilution of the engine oil between actively increased and normal or reduced values for fuel saving. The increased values of the engine oil dilution are adjustable for a lower region of the engine load or the temperature of the engine and the engine oil. The normal or reduced values are adjusted for an upper region of the engine load or the temperature of the engine and the engine oil. An independent claim is included for a device for operating an internal combustion engine having liquid fuels in motor vehicle and for active reduction of engine oil dilution of internal combustion engines with liquid fuels in motor vehicles.
