The machine (1) has a guide device for translatorily guiding a crankshaft (2) along an adjusting path between two positions of the crankshaft. The positions of the crankshaft are fixed corresponding to two compression ratios, where one of the compression ratios is different from the other compression ratio. A translational adjustment device (3) translatorily adjusts the crankshaft. A balance shaft (8) is fixed perpendicular to the crankshaft, and a connection device makes a torque-transferring contact between the crankshaft and the balance shaft by a gear pair (7). An independent claim is also included for a method for ensuring transmission of torque between an adjustable crankshaft of a reciprocating engine and to an axis of a crankshaft.
