The microchip laser (1) has an optical sensor (10) that receives optical laser pulses (7) generated by saturable absorber (3), and controls an optical pumping device (8) pumping an optical gain medium (2). The gain medium is pumped with pumping pulses of desired repetition, for producing a determined repetition frequency of short optical laser pulse by the passive quality circuit. The duration of each pumping pulse is limited such that the pumping pulse is immediately switched according to the receipt of certain number of short optical laser pulses by the optical sensor.
