The system (1) has a fuel cell (3) comprising an anode chamber (5) and a cathode chamber (4). A device is provided for removal of oxygen in a region connected with the cathode chamber. The oxygen removal device is formed as an electrochemical oxygen pump (15), which is connected with the cathode chamber with an electrode (16). Another electrode (17) of the pump is connected with an environment of the fuel cell. The cathode chamber is formed without shutoff valves. The pump is arranged in front and/or behind the cathode chamber in an air flow direction during operation of the cell. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
