The fuel cell system (2) comprises a primary fuel cell stack (3) and a secondary fuel cell stack (4). The starting materials are passed through the primary fuel cell stack and secondary fuel cell stack. Two fuel cell stacks are formed as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack. The exhaust air from the primary fuel cell stack is passed through expansion unit (10) provided between primary fuel cell stack and the secondary fuel cell stack. An independent claim is included for method for operating fuel cell system.
