The engine has a closed housing (1) in which a working fluid (16) is located, where the working fluid is limited on a side by a working surface (6) or by a separation layer and on another side by a working membrane (18) or by a linked hydraulic drive. A steam volume (14) located about the working surface or the separation layer is filled by the working fluid in a gaseous state. A guide stamper (4) and/or a retainer of a controller are arranged in the steam volume and in a liquid space within the housing, where the guide stamper is connected with a steam supply (9).
