The internal combustion engine (1) has a cylinder (2) that is provided with two intake ports, a gas exchange controller and a charge cycle controller. Two gas exchange components are provided for closing the two intake ports of the cylinder. The first intake port is provided for air mass flow and the second intake port is provided for fuel mass flow. Hydrogen content of the fuel mass flow is greater than 15 volume%, and hydrogen content of air mass flow is less than or equal to 5 volume% most preferably less than or equal to 2 volume%. An independent claim is included for a method for operating internal combustion engine.
