The ACB system (10) includes a controller (20) having a memory (24) that stores and a processor (22) that executes a computer-executable instructions to set an initial braking reacting distance. The instructions are also used for defining a following distance limit shape as a function of a lateral offset function, monitoring trigger conditions, detecting a trigger event and either adjusting the braking reacting distance at a predetermined distance or adjusting the shape of the following distance limit shape. An independent claim is also included for a modifying or adjusting method for a braking reaction distance as a function of a detected trigger event.
