The refrigerator has a refrigerating compartment (5), a freezing compartment (4), and a refrigerating circuit having an evaporator for cooling the compartments and a compressor (1) operable at different speeds. A temperature sensor is provided for measuring the ambient temperature. A regulating unit is communicated with the temperature sensor and the compressor to increase and decrease the speed of the compressor and the supply volume and time of the refrigerant based on the ambient temperature detected by the temperature sensor. An independent claim is included for a method for operating refrigerator.
