The method involves measuring a value of an energy parameter for serially interconnected battery cells (1a) of a battery (1), where the energy parameter is utilized as an absolute energy parameter (L). Inputs of the battery are compensated in an inhomogeneous energy state of the battery based on the measured values to adjust a homogeneous energy state of the battery. The battery cells are balanced for the absolute energy parameter by partial discharge (40) of the battery cells, where the absolute energy parameter is defined for all the battery cells in a standard manner.
