The device has a driver activity sensor arrangement (20), and an intensity sensor (41) for determining intensity in the surrounding of a motor vehicle and arranged in a passenger compartment. A tiredness model (11) determines a value characterizing tiredness of a driver based on output parameter of the sensor arrangement. A correction module (47) corrects the value based on output parameter of the intensity sensor. A camera (24) detects a road surface in front of the motor vehicle, and the sensor arrangement has an acceleration sensor (23) for detecting acceleration of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting tiredness of a driver in a motor vehicle.
