The press (10) has a stamper (17) that is moved relative to a die (22) in a working direction (R). A shaping surface (25) of the die is cooperated with a face surface of the stamper, to form bottom of a can object. A measuring unit (40) is provided for creating a measurement signal (M) defining the bottom thickness of the can object during the transformation of the slug to the can object. A setting unit (43) is provided for setting an upper turning point (PO) and a lower turning point (PU) between the stamper and die based on measurement signal. An independent claim is included for method for manufacturing can object from slug.
